juice for the win

purple power

Happy New Year! I know we’re a little belated here, but we hope everyone is having a wonderful 2013 so far! I think we all try to eat a little healthier and move a little more this time of year– a combination of New Year’s resolutions and getting away from the sweets and heavy foods of the holidays. I am no exception.

fruits + veg

Like most people, Derek and I are trying to eat a bit healthier this year. In an attempt to get more vegetables into my diet, I’ve started juicing. I’m not at the point of replacing any meals or anything, but I have a juice or two each day as a supplement to my normal diet. I do hope to build up to a 3 to 5 day juice fast by the end of the month to serve as a cleanse or reboot for my digestive system.

straight out of the juicer

You might be wondering where this idea is coming from. If so, check out Joe Cross’s documentary: “Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead“. You can watch it for free on Netflix streaming or on Hulu. He also has a helpful website, Reboot with Joe, that has lot of information about juicing.

ready to go

My oh so generous in-laws gifted me with an awesome juicer for Christmas (Thanks, Uncle Scott!), so I’ve been juicing every morning since the first of the year. Below are some of my juicing tips as well as some recipes that I’ve tried and liked so far. Happy juicing!

jane’s juicing tips
1. Line the pulp basket with a plastic bag so that you can just toss the whole thing in the trash rather than having to wash the basket with every use.
2. Disassemble and wash the entire juicer before you drink your juice. It really only takes 5 minutes!
3. The night before, wash and prep all of the fruits and veggies so that you’re ready to go in the morning. Also wash a [pint size] mason jar– the perfect BPA-free, air tight storage container for your juice! Have everything set up and ready to go so you can juice right away.
4. Start with a smaller (1/4″) piece of ginger in recipes that call for 1″ piece of ginger– it’s strong!
5. When juicing, start with the greens or softer fruit and work up to the harder fruits and veggies. This helps to clean out the grinding mechanism.
